The height of the triangle is nearly 4 metres inside, to hang lights the logical thing would be to bring in a tower but all that bulk and stabilizers would mean clearing the space of objects first. We found this tripod ladder in the college which is used for changing high lightbulbs and we are pretty confident it will do well.
proof seen here and full set arrives monday. Orange printing in covt. garden are really fast because they use a digital process which is also cheaper. We have been warned off some digital printers but everyone has told us that orange is good, last year we got all our cards done via litho and had to go to Hong Kong to get the best price. We held off this year until we could find the correct price within our budget for money and air miles, which brings us to our understated aim of reducing waste, and energy resouces this year. We have nearly 20 lights in the show this year but every one is an energy saving low power sourced coil fluorescent replacement of its usual regular spotlight type which would be both hot and power hungry. All our plinths have been built to a higher standard this year as we intend to flatpack and reuse half, along with our backlit pods from last year e should have an instant show when we need it in future, Were not saying we are perfect but at least the show team this year has been considering these issues and reflecting them in their practice.
Finally managed to start in the space with the whole third year who have now submitted their final major projects today - this what really tired people look like. Sleep well - show build starts in the morning with a weekend of painting and lighting. Apologies for the dodgy iphone pic.
Here's some photos that Andreas Neophytou took (ex student now with Six Create) a couple of years ago of an exhibition at the Guardian newspaper using large glass or acrylic topped cases similar to ours.
The text installation has been in for a long time but now it looks like a lot of work for only a general effect .. certainly it wont work in the original space and we had planned lighting-wise as that space is now possibly hosting some blown up photo work plus the content is not yet edited although its agreed that the idea is sound: dissertation text excerpts projected white on black (black=no light) over a large area. Similar to this found online..
So rather than dropping it we need to find a new wall for it and a l3 student with some time and energy after the work submission deadline, you will need to..
get text from frank, source a projector (david can help), source a computer, learn quartz composer, build a cradle for the projector and make something great!
Have since asked frank to dig out some dissertation clippings just in case.
We don’t want to keep you all waiting for the whole day on Tuesday so I have split you up into groups of 4 or 5 and you are only required to attend for 40minutes (max) of your allocated time.
Please don’t be late as this will eat into other group times and delay the running order for the day. Thank you.
+++ Styling for shoot +++
CLOTHES: Primark Slim fit white long-sleeve shirt, slim-line black tie and any plain black trousers.
HAIR/ MAKE-UP: Ladies, Agyness Deyn is your style icon, the epitome of sexy and androgyny (as quoted in this months ID magazine). She can sometimes have very slick combed back hair, fine straightened hair or other times very styled and big, but it all follows an exciting contemporary look. As for make-up keep it natural nothing gothic just simple and clean.
Men: think young Micheal Cane oozing cool, suave sophistication or perhaps geek-chic of IMG model Ryan Taylor.
If there are any legitimate reasons as to why you can’t make your allocated time E-mail/call (07824 811 893) and I will try and swap it.
+++ Location +++ Chelsea College. Room ?
We will leave a notice by the lift (ground floor) as to which room we’re in as it is still tbc.
Thanks for your corporation, hopefully this will be fun, and don’t agonise too much about the look… the above is just a rough guideline and we can adjust any styling details on the day if necessary.
After Tuesday, the group shots will be comped together to form one long raster-bated image that will act as grid wallpaper against the entire back wall of the show!
Update 21st may - david barnett - I have sent images from our show plans and previous shows to luxam who advertise a free analysis of our show lighting needs.
WHAT A GREAT TURN OUT! 43/44 students came for the shoot and that was even with all the webmail complications!
Betty (from the photography dept.) was a gem and ran around rooms with Gavin and I before we finally chose the casket space to work in. After taking 2hours to set up, things sped up and followed order quickly thanks to everyone coming at there allocated time. We didn't once run over time! Thank you to all, although not particularly experienced in portrait photography we appreciate your cooperation and willingness to pull together for this photo and got some great results!
Many thank you's to all.
Lisa.
Ps- Gavin, I couldn't have done the shoot without you! Thank you a million times.
following on from Gavs reference to the Jonathan Barnbrook exhibition and yesterdays show meeting with regards to lighting and boxes I have attached some more pictures from the exhibit...

1. Reflections:
2. Poss way to display the books
- I think this could really work for the books and you can even lift the top up if you still needed a closer look?
3. Lighting the space:
4. display cabinets within space/ examples of colours:
All of the things that you see in the following images are made out of cardboard. These examples show that making cardboard look elegant and glamorous is possible. (anastazia)
Contacted Sam Robinson (Olympics portrait photographer) about year group photo ideas and he's more than happy to help out. Said we should arrange a meeting after we've sorted out what we want and go from there. - Gavin
Simple geometric boxes containing 3D books/bags/dolls/ornaments/products designed for final major projects, personal effects; and laptops containing moving image work from our own actual, working desktops (complete with files, backgrounds, dock icons etc....if we end up using these cases, adding our own, real laptops would be a million times better than hiring new, shiny ones).
The design of this particular case is probably too museumy but you get the point. - Gav

I had an idea which would look good i think, but avoid "boxes" it is a sort of card board screen with a roof type thing that stands against a wall. It is hard to describe, but i have attached pics... it could really be any shape i suppose, but i like the idea because if there are holes in it, it leaves room between the wall and the screen for back lighting it without risk of fire.
what do you think?
The shape is only an example... it could technically be any shape.
I had a massive conversation with my dad and he raised a few issues such as how do we ensure the folios dont fall out of their slots.. but some sor of solution is included in the images. The idea is that we have 3 different shape boxes: a cube/cuboid, a cuboid with one side at a 45º angle and one with a side at a 60º angle. this would enable us to stack them at right angles and create walls OR if we choose to have a more random set up, they will look good with angles jutting out. I decided that it seemed right that there were two folios to a box/module (four if they are double sided, we may want to use the space created by them for projection space.) It should all be in the illustrations.
Bigger flagpole = bigger price. The biggest ones are up to £700-£800 each. Might be economical to buy many small flagpoles as opposed to one gigantic one, but the range of prices is huge.
**Local builder's merchants can donate at least 5 flagpoles for free, 6m high, with pulley system**
Here's the image we were referring to last week taken from real estate interiors but could be adapted and incorporated into our show with the use of cardboard boxes.
We already know from the BBC project what great effect projections can have so here's some more examples of what can be done with large scale coloured projections onto the surface of a building.
The diamond constructions in the corner are made out od shiny metallic card and look really solid and glamorous!
Image is from my phone and not great but you get the picture!
Another bad phone photo This time from the V+A Illustration Awards where red tape was used to make geometric patterns along the walls in the space and descriptions of the artists work was placed inside the boxes. I was thinking of a colour scheme centered around the primary colours, red yellow and Blue. Here are some shades that you can buy electrical tape in:
I spoke to the lovely lady Kate at Magma and she gave me lots of information about their shelving. She said that they were designed by architects Julie Blum and Nikki Blustin and PRODUCED by a company called SCA Packaging. They are made out of treated cardboard and were dilivered flat packed and ready to assemble.
according to the the woman at Magma, you can send a design to these SCA people and they will manufacture it and send it all flat packed to you to make.
they're website is http://www.scapackaging.com/
although it wasnt THAT helpful, we can call them too.
Also, Demelza Hill, who i remebered from the New Designers exhibition this year, and who gavin got in touch with is an option for a designer, but maybe we could do it ourselves and then get someone to produce it.
The other days i went to O2 centre to see a performance when i noticed outside these 'light paths'
After that, doing some research on the net i found this lightape material that reminded me of the above picture. We could use it in various ways, such as outdoor to create a path or even indoors.
http://www.elshine.it/inglese/lighting.htm here is the link where i found the information about the lightape.
In my research for new eco-friendly materials I have found this event going on at earls court... one of those show cases for eco building... we might be able to get sponsership/ideas/help/contacts/cheap deals if we are nice enough! Let me know what you think. Laura P x ecobuild 26th-28th Feb
Obviously I am not suggesting we all strip off... however, what I am proposing is a large Panaroma of the whole group and everyone doing something different in each area (look at '4Creative' examples below).
Also, I remember when I did Quick-Time VR in second year David showed us how to create 'hotspots'... this way when scrolling over the image you could have peoples names and portfolio numbers appear besides there image linking to each individuals work.
This is more like the colour/styling inspiration that could work:
'4Creatives' award-winning billboards:
Other possible advantages to this idea will be that it won't necessarily have to be printed. Last week it was also discussed if we are having work digital and on USBs the shoot (whatever theme we choose) could be the opening page.
Temporary sculptures or structures would work alongside the recycling theme & temporary nature of the exhibition (fits around the short time frame & has a nod to the sausage-factory trend culture of art school graduation).
Show titles and signage could be temporary, made to last less than a week, bespoke designs that are destroyed after the show, signage that can be given away etc. etc.
Example from recent exhibition:
Stefan Sagmeister: 'Self-Confidence Produces Fine Results'
The pulp seating was something that did not go into production due to the large tooling costs. Im looking to do a few more shows and events though so if we both have the time i may be interested in collaborating to design something for the show? With the topic of recycling the possibilites go on and on.
Anyway let me know what you think,
Kind regards Demelza

Told her we'd be in touch after our meeting next week and that we welcomed a collaborative project.
Firstly im really sorry if this goes in the wrong section its the first time i posted on this blog and im confused.
Basically in a tutorial it was mentioned that an idea for the show would be to have work on usb's for viewers to insert in the show to view work..but apparently there was concern that the work could then be stolen with the usb.
My friend on fashion hair/makeup did a show last year which used a similar idea but had a really useful medium. A wall contained large numbers of cards like in the images below, on the front was an image that best represented the student's work and their name and on the back a 'symbol code' thing and also contact details/business card details of the student.
The idea was that viewers could look at the wall, and seeing an image of work that interested them take the card over to a number of large 'lightboxes'. Once you place the card back-down on the lightbox, a slideshow of images encrypted into the code appears on the lightbox. You then can turn the card on the box which would rotate through the other images.
The good thing about them is that because of the code the work cant be stolen, only viewed, and also becuase you can get hundreds per student with the contact details they can then be taken away and work as a physical business card for the student.
I hope that explains it...i dont have any images from the actual exhibition unfortunately but i found one card i took from there and photographed it below. Apologies for the quality of the image, and also the fact that the card got bent unfortunately means you might not get the idea but they are postcard sized and look smart. The wierd pattern on the reverse is the code that holds the images for lightbox viewing.
